KABUL (PAN): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday launched voter registration process for the 2014 presidential and provincial council elections simultaneously in Kabul and provincial capitals across the country.
A total of 4.5 million eligible people would get voter cards, IEC spokesman, Noor Mohammad Noor, told a press conference in Kabul.

KABUL (PAN): Urban Development Minister Hassan Abdulhai on Sunday said masters plans designed for provincial capitals and district centres could not be implemented due to growing incidents of land-grab across the country.
Abdulhai and Kabul mayor Mohammad Yunus Nawandish were summoned at the upper house to brief senators on progress being made in the execution of master plans in cities.
Some lawmakers complained that some provincial capitals had been ignored in connection with master plans.

KABUL (PAN): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Saturday said it was fully prepared to keep security for voter registration centres, a process beginning Sunday.
The Independent Election Commission (IEC) last week said it was concerned about security for voter registration centres, saying four million eligible people would be registered.

KABUL (PAN): The Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of Parliament, on Wednesday adopted the amended  electoral law with some further amendments after a long-lasting debate.

KABUL (PAN): Despite fund shortage, treatment of drug addicts would be increased from the current six percent to 48 percent over next four years, an official told the upper house on Tuesday.
Nearly one million people in Afghanistan are addicted to drugs. Of them, 12 percent are addicted to heroin, 25 percent to opium and the rest use other types of drugs.

KABUL (PAN): Lawmakers on Tuesday poured scorn on Jan Kubis, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and UNAMA head, for calling on Afghan authorities to step up their efforts at fully implementing the law on elimination of violence against women.
The upper house members said Kubis's demand was clear interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs, asking foreigners to avoid giving them such advises.
