Women’s active participation in polls urged

 
HERAT CITY (Pajhwok):  Culture lovers and civil society activists in western Herat province on Saturday called for the runoff election on June 14 to be free, fair and transparent.
They made the call at the conclusion of a consultative gathering titled “Elections not Compromise-based System” attended by youth representatives, civil society and culture activists.
Khalil Parsa, a civil society activist, said ballot papers’ shortage had been a major problem during the first round presidential elections on April 5.

Five policemen were injured in 20 different security incidents in Herat province.

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The US on Thursday called on Afghanistan’s electoral bodies to stay impartial in the process of preparing presidential election results.
Addressing a press conference in Herat City, US Consul General Yojin Es Young said people would participate in the run-off vote with the same level of enthusiasm as they did in the April 5 elections.

HERAT CITY (PAN): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) regional office in western Herat province on Monday said the polls’ legitimacy would be questioned if the women were denied participation.
Addressing a public awareness conference for women in Herat City, the provincial capital, IEC head for Herat Ahmad Zia Zia said since the beginning of the voter registration process in early June, 70,000 people received voter cards.

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Sunday said it had cancelled about 100,000 votes cast at 27 polling stations in western Herat province.
IECC Herat chief Abdullah Sherzai told reporters the votes were thrown out in light of investigations into 28 complaints registered in this regard.
He said the invalid votes belonged to presidential candidates and had been cast at polling stations in Herat City and Kushk, Rubat Sangi, Shindand, Farsi, Gulran and Kuhsan districts.
