Women’s active participation in polls urged

HERAT CITY (PAN): Opposition leader Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday said the Karzai administration lacked political will to hold fair and free presidential elections taking place next year. The Afghanistan National Front leader told a press conference in western Herat province the government had no intention to ensure transparent elections, claiming some candidates used government machinery for their political campaigns.

What country has the most expensive election campaigns in the world? At a first glance the answer may be obvious; in the recent US elections over 2 billion dollars were spent, and combined with the other elections held at that time, the total spending is estimated to over 6 billion.

As part of its election coverage plan, Pajhwok Afghan News is interviewing residents of all 34 provinces. Members of different age groups will be asked basic questions, such as whether they will participate in the August 20 presidential and provincial council polls, what they want the government to do and what their objections to official policies are.

HERAT CITY (PAN): Thousands of residents of this western city on Saturday took to the streets, rejecting as illegal the election of Syed Wahid Qatali as provincial council chief.
Qatali won a second round of the ballot that involved 12 members and held in Kabul last week in presence of Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) officials.
