US envoy wants poll panels to be neutral

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The US on Thursday called on Afghanistan’s electoral bodies to stay impartial in the process of preparing presidential election results.
Addressing a press conference in Herat City, US Consul General Yojin Es Young said people would participate in the run-off vote with the same level of enthusiasm as they did in the April 5 elections.
The US and the international community would stand behind Afghanistan, he promised, saying that the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) should stay neutral.
The April 5 presidential and provincial council elections were more transparent than the 2009 election, he recalled.  He said the international community would support every democratic step in Afghanistan.
