HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Over a hundred residents of western Herat province on Tuesday condemned recent incidents of poisoning of students and teachers, seeking the arrest of those involved in the crime.
More than 800 students, including girls, were poisoned last week in a series of poisoning incidents at different schools of Injil and Guzra districts, as well the provincial capital.
Abdul Rahman Pidram, a provincial council member, told a protest gathering here the Herat security institutions had failed to deal with attacks on students and teachers. He demanded the prompt arrest of perpetrators.
Khalil Parsa, a civil society activist, said the purpose of the gathering was to denouncethe individuals involved in the poisoning attacks. He alleged security officials had not taken the issue seriously.
Mrs. Sahab, the mother of a poisoned student, claimed militants wanted to discourage families from sending their children to school. She said parents had decided to educate their children at all costs.
Education Director Abdul Razzaq Ahmadi said the perpetrators behind the recent incidents could not be identified so far. Security officials had been trying to find and punish them at the earliest, he concluded.
