Faryab is known as the northern province of Afghanistan, sharing border with Turkmenistan.
Arab historians and Khurasani are of the opinion that province had different names in different times of period including Feiryab, Paryab and Baryab.
Faryab was part of Kurasan region during the 6th Islamic century and area had large territory including the nearby areas of Jawzjan, which contributed to its strategic and economic importance in the 4th century.
