MAHMUD RAQI (PAN): A gathering addressed by Dr. Abdullah Abdullah -- a key challenger to incumbent President Hamid Karzai -- came under attack from militants in the central Kapisa province late Monday night.

KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai maintained his lead over his closest rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, a senior Independent Election Commission (IEC) official said here on Monday.

KABUL (PAN): Getting closer to the 50 percent votes needed to avoid a run-off, President Hamid Karzai has widened his lead to 46.3 percent over his closest rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.

JALALABAD (PAN): Suspected armed Taliban attacked an election rally of a presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in Dar-i-Noor district of the eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, injuring two persons.

KABUL (PAN): Presidential candidate Sarwar Ahmadzai Wednesday demanded re-elections in 12 provinces where irregularities were reported during the August 20 polls.


 

GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Three parliamentarians from southern Ghazni province on Sunday escaped unhurt in an insurgent attack in central Maidan Wardak province, an official said.

KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai is cruising toward a first-round victory in Afghanistan's presidential election, tallying 71 percent of the 4.5 million votes counted so far, knowledgeable sources revealed on Saturday.


 KABUL (PAN): Asian election observers' head has accused key candidates of misusing governmental facilities and resources in presidential and provincial council polls held on August 20.

KANDAHAR (PAN): The head of Independent Election Commission for the southwestern zone said minor mistakes during the election process could not overshadow the legitimacy and transparency of the elections held on August 20.


KABUL (PAN): The government would initiate legal action against those breaking the law and want to threaten security of the country, said the spokesman for the president, Hamayun Hamidzada on Tuesday.
