JALALABAD (PAN): Ballot boxes from two polling centres in the eastern province of Nuristan have been thrown into a river by Taliban militants.

KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai is ahead of his key challenger Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in preliminary results of the presidential elections announced here on Tuesday.

KABUL (PAN): In a major policy shift, the Department of Defence is notifying the International Committee of the Red Cross of the identities of "militants" being held in US-run secret at camps in Afghanistan and Iraq.

WASHINGTON (PAN): Congratulating the people of Afghanistan on successful conduct of elections, US President Barack Obama said he hoped the goal to defeat al-Qaeda and the Taliban would be achieved as Afghanistan takes responsibility for its own future.


KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai is cruising toward a first-round victory in Afghanistan's presidential election, tallying 71 percent of the 4.5 million votes counted so far, knowledgeable sources revealed on Saturday.

KABUL (PAN): United Nations special representative in Afghanistan Kai Eide on Tuesday welcomed an agreement reached between the two independent electoral bodies on modalities for resolving issues remaining before final certification of the poll results.

WASHINGTON (PAN): Praising Afghans for coming out in large number to vote for the presidential and provincial council elections, the United Nations and the United States have said they are looking forward to working with the new government once the results are declared.

WASHINGTON (PAN): The United States has expressed concern over allegations of fraud by some candidates against the incumbent Hamid Karzai and his closest competitor, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.
