KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Tuesday expressed concern over the absence of election observers, saying electoral materials from 93 percent of districts have reached provincial capitals.
Habib Rahman Nang, IEC secretary, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the commission had transferred election materials to 435 districts and so far the materials from 407 districts had reached provincial capitals and their transfer from other districts was in progress.
He said the transfer of election materials from all districts of the country to the IEC main office was expected to complete until October 5.
“Whenever election materials are being transferred from provinces to the capital, election observers should monitor the process, but we could not see them in the IEC as three days have passed since the Election Day”, he added.
“We waited for election observers for two days, we will start our work today and ask election observers to come to the commission as soon as possible, we have considered all needed facilities for observers,” he said.
Nang said the commission was ready to announce the results on time if election observers attended the process otherwise the process would get affected.
A day earlier, the IEC announced that more than two million people voted at 3,736 polling sites in 29 provinces of the country.
Initial results of the election would be announced on October 19 after reviewing and addressing electoral complaints, Nang said.
