Call for infrastructure projects in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Dozens of youth on Tuesday staged a protest in southern Kandahar province, asking the new government to launch key infrastructure projects there.

The protestors gathered at Shahidano Square in Kandahar City and walked different roads. They extended stout support to the new government, but demanded Kandahar’s due share in development schemes.

One of the protestors, Hamid Ullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News government officials had promised key infrastructure in Kandahar but no big scheme had been implemented in the last 13 years.

He urged the new administration, led by President Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, to focus on alleviating unemployment in the province and honour his promise of resolving youth’s problems.

Youth Organisation head Abdul Wali Wadan said young people have organised the protest to push for their rights and express disappointment over apathy of the Karzai administration towards them.

“The new government should start on priority the projects the province needs,” he said. Wadan said the Arghistan Dam, as and when built, could generate electricity and irrigate agricultural land.
