Alhaj Mullah Sayed Muhammad Akhund, son of Haji Mullah Dad Muhammad Akhund, was born in 1959 in Dand district of Kandahar province. Akhund graduated from ShaheedGhulam Muhammad Madrasa in Kandahar in 1992. Akhund joined the jihad during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and from 2002-2004, he commanded the Seventh Division of the Afghan army in Kandahar province. He then participated in the Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process. Akhund was elected to the Kandahar Provincial Council in 2005; from this position, he was later selected to serve in the Meshrano Jirga. His first language is Pashto and he also speaks Dari.1 61

Turan Sahib Abdul Khaliq Khan Balakarzai, son of Haji Abdul Razaq, was born in 1959 in Balakarzai village, Dand district, Kandahar province. Balakarzai completed his studies at HarbiKhwanzai Military School in 1975 in Kabul and graduated from the artillery department of HarbiPohantoon Military University in Pul-iCharkhi, Kabul in 1978. From 1978-1980, Balakarzai was the Logistics Commander of the 101st Artillery Battalion of the Afghan Army’s Second Corp in Kandahar. In 1980, he joined the Mujahideen and was a commander for Hezb-e-JamiatIslami Afghanistan for ten years. After the fall of the Taliban, from 2001-2004, he worked with the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) process in Kandahar province. From 2004 to 2005, he served as district governor of Spin Boldak district; following this, he joined the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DAIG) program in Kandahar through 2010. His first language is Pashto and he also speaks Dari and a little English.163

BibiHamidaYousufi, daughter of Haji Muhammad Yousof, was born in 1983 in Argandab district, Kandahar province.  Yousufi completed her primary education at Bilal High School and her secondary education at Noor High School in Quetta, Pakistan, in 2001. She then studied medicine for two years at the Makah Mukaramah Hospital and Medical College in Quetta. She worked as a supervisor for the Joint Electoral Management Board (JEMB) in Kandahar from 2003 to 2004 and as a district field coordinator in 2005. She was a customer service representative at Azizi Bank’s Kandahar branch from 2006 to 2007. From 2008-2009, she worked as a grant officer at the International Relief & Development (IRD) office in Kandahar and from 2009-2010 she worked with IRD’s Afghanistan Vouchers for Increased Production in Agriculture (AVIPA) program as a grant officer. Dr. Mahmud Khan, son of Haji Yar Muhammad Khan, was born in 1980 in Rambasi village, Dand District, Kandahar province. In 2000, Khan graduated from Kandahar’s Alberuni High School. He has a bachelor’s degree from the Medical Faculty of Kandahar University, which he earned in 2008. Khan founded and is the current director of an NGO based in Kandahar working for youth. He established the organization, called the Afghan Youth Educational and Social Consultancy Organization (AYESCO), in 2010. From 2006-2007, Khan worked as a volunteer doctor in the surgical department of Merwais Hospital in Kandahar city and took an official internship there in 2008. From 2009 to May 2010, Khan worked as an advisor with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kandahar. 1 He speaks Pashto and English.

Haji Muhammad Omer Nangyalai, son of Haji Abdul Wahid, was born in 1967 in the sixth district of Kandahar city, Kandahar province. Nangyalai completed his primary education in Shah Husain Hotak School in Kandahar in 1974 and his secondary education in Quetta, Pakistan, at the English Intermediate High school. He has also studied management, English, computer science and computer programming in Quetta. Nangyalai has worked in NGO administration for many years. From 1990-1992, he worked for the Inter Church Aid Committee and Christian Hospital Refugee Extension Project (CHREF) as computer instructor and finance officer. He then worked for two years with Church World Service (CWS) as a general administrator. Following the fall of the Taliban he joined the Asian Rural Life Development Foundation (ARLDF) as a field coordinator and then served as advisor to Cure International from 2002 to 2005. Nangialai has owned his own construction company since 2002, and also owns a business importing goods from Dubai and Singapore to Afghanistan. Nangyalai’s first language is Pashto and he also speaks Dari, English and Urdu.170

Khalid Pashton, son of Bashir Ahmad Pashton, was born in 1959 in Kandahar. Pashton completed his primary education at the Tajrubawi School and his secondary education at ZahirShahi High School in Kandahar. In 1981 he immigrated to the United States and enrolled in Watterson College in California, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Business and Management. Pashton taught at the Tajrubawi School from 1979-1980. From 1980-1981, he worked in a government office as an accountant. After graduating from college in the United States, he worked as the manager of a computer company and then in the American banking industry. In 2001, he began his own business in the United States. After returning to Afghanistan, he was appointed head of the Department for Foreign Affairs in Kandahar, and the political representative of Southern Kandahar. He was also a spokesperson and political advisor to the Governor of Kandahar. He owns a prominent construction company in Kandahar. Pashton was elected to parliament in 2005. He speaks Pashto, Dari and English.
