TALOQAN (PAN): The new governor of northern Takhar province on Monday vowed to fight corruption and make efforts at strengthening unity among tribes.
Abdul Latif Ibrahimi, who was introduced as the new governor at a ceremony in Taloqan, the provincial capital, promised to bring into use all resources in the fight against corruption, urging citizens to help him materialise his pledges.
However, some participants of the ceremony warned the governor could face serious problems if he failed to honour his promises.
A Mujahidin Council spokesman, Mamor Hassan, said: “We want the new governor to speed up efforts at developing and maintaining unity in the province.”
He said some of their demands had already been met by the central government, but they wanted the new governor to do more for the development of Takhar.
Hassan said laws were not equally enforced in Takhar and the campaign against corruption required collective efforts.
Qari Abdul Halim, another participant, said: “We want the governor to be more active and make every possible effort at addressing people’s problems.”
He said the people of Takhar were in dire need of new projects concerning electricity, water supply, hospitals, roads, schools and canals.
