KABUL (PAN): The second term of the provincial councils of Kabul and Faryab provinces formally began on Sunday after final poll results were announced by Independent Election Commission (IEC). About 525 candidates fielded themselves for the 29 seats, including nine reserved for women in Kabul provincial council in the August 20 provincial elections. The newly elected members took oath at a ceremony held in this regard in Kabul on Sunday. Kabul governor Dr. Zabihullah Mujadidi, Eng. Muhammad Yunus Nawandish, Colonel Khalilullah Dastyar, deputy Kabul police chief, chiefs of Kabul police districts, Sayed Qutbuddin, head of local governance body and former and current provincial council members attended the ceremony. Qutbuddin announced that the second term of provincial council began on Sunday based on an official letter from the IEC. He praised the outgoing provincial council members, saying they played a major role in the conflict resolution and eradication of poppy. He said former members worked honestly in the face of numerous problems. He said the new members had good opportunities to serve the people. Dr. Zabihullah Mujadidi on the occasion said it was responsibility of the council members to create close liaison between people and government for the developmet of the country. Farida Tarana, provincial council member, told Pajhwok Afghan News that she would spare no effort in serving the people of Kabul. In Faryab, the newly elected provincial council members assumed their duties on Sunday. However, the results were not endorsed by the defeated candidates. Aman Khan, head of IEC in Faryab province, said 15 people, including four women, out of 85 contestants were declared the winners. Muhammad Tahir, a defeated candidate, said he would not accept the IEC decision.. mnm/ma
