KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai has issued a decree summoning into session the Wolesi Jirga, Lower House of Parliament, tomorrow to vet and vote on a new list of his cabinet nominees. Karzai is likely to propose a new list of cabinet ministers tomorrow after MPs in a secret vote at the weekend rejected 17 out of his 24 nominees. A reliable official source confided to Pajhwok Afghan News that the new list included three women. They included Palwasha Hassan for the portfolio of women's affairs, Ameena Afzali, work and social affairs and Surriya Daleel, public health. In the initial list, there was only one female nominee for the ministry of women affairs, Husn Banu Ghazzanfar, but she failed to get the trust vote from lawmakers in Saturday's voting. The inclusion of women in cabinet came after a number of civil society and women organisations criticised President Hamid Karzai for placing only one woman in his previous cabinet list. Eleven of the 24 cabinet picks introduced by Karzai to parliament for approval were new faces. Only seven of them were approved by parliamentarians in Saturday's vote. Karzai was returned for a second five-year term after last August's election. The United Nations has said international funding for this year's parliamentary elections will depend on reform of the country's election institutions. Head of administrative affairs at the Presidential Palace Faizi Zadran told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone that president had called a special session of National Assembly in order to complete the cabinet on time. He said the session would continue until the process of giving trust vote to the new cabinet picks was completed. Zadran said new faces would be introduced to the parliament for portfolios of those rejected.
