KABUL (PAN): President Karzai's designated man for the Ministry of Finance Dr. Omar Zakhelwal has said Afghanistan will be able to fulfill its requirement from domestic budget in the next three years. In his appearance before the Wolesi Jirga to get trust vote on Wednesday, Zakhelwal said the volume of country's budget would mount to 100 billion afghanis next year. The current volume of the budget is around 1.8 billion dollars. He said the domestic revenues had decreased due to corruption, non-payment of taxes and incapability of the government officials over the past few years. He said some foreign companies, who are bringing goods for the foreigners in Afghanistan, were not paying taxes to the government. He said the country's revenues would increase if they paid the taxes. He also named some foreign companies in this regard which did not pay the custom duties. "I've persuaded the foreign companies now to pay custom duty to the government," he added. He said two billion dollars had been spent in terms of payment of salaries to foreign advisers in Afghanistan. However, he stressed the need for domestic advisers. Replying to questions from the Wolesi Jirga members, Zakhelwal said his ministry had adopted serious measures to control corruption, but said the same were not enough. He admitted that large-scale corruption was existing in customs offices of the country. Zakhelwal is one of the nominated members for the next cabinet who also served in the previous cabinet of Hamid Karzai. dk
