KABUL (PAN): Canada has affirmed its desire to work together with the new Afghan government to improve the security situation and delivery of basic services and bolster efforts at combating the scourge of corruption. "Canada notes the announcement by First Vice-President Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim of most of the new cabinet for the government of Afghanistan," the Canadian ambassador said on Saturday. William Crosbie added: "Canada had called for merit-based appointments. We are pleased to see that the list of candidates includes competent individuals, some of whom we have worked with in the past." In a statement, the envoy said: "We understand the qualifications of these candidates will be considered by Parliament, followed by a vote of confidence. Canada encourages Afghan parliamentarians to exercise their constitutional responsibility to review and confirm a final cabinet. We look forward to the completion of this process." mud/pr
