KABUL (PAN): The attorney-general's office Wednesday submitted to the Wolesi Jirga, lower house of parliament, a list of 17 senior government officials facing corruption cases, a legislator revealed. The names of 11 acting ministers and six governors -- accused of administrative corruption and abuse of power -- were included in the list, the lawmaker told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity. Mullah Abdul Salam Rakiti, Wolesi Jirga member from Kabul, confirmed submission of the list to the lower house. However, given the sensitivity of the issue, he stopped short of giving further details. The house had asked the attorney-general's office to provide it with the names of corruption-tainted politicians before President Hamid Karzai, sworn in for a second term on November 19, unveiled his new cabinet. Deputy Attorney-General Fazal Ahmed Faqiryar presented the list to parliamentarians behind closed doors. Journalists covering parliamentary proceedings were asked to leave as the in-camera session got under way. Approached for comments later in the day, Faqiryar said over the telephone he could not share details of the in-camera session with the media. Haji Farid, an outspoken public representative from central Kapisa province, opposed the closed-door deliberations. However, he also expressed his inability to comment on today's proceedings. Former planning minister and representative of Kabul residents, Ramazan Bashardost, vehemently opposed the in-camera session. The French-educated MP walked out of the Wolesi Jirga as a token of protest. Although Pajhwok Afghan News has obtained a copy of the list, it is not releasing the names in deference to journalistic principles and a media law that bans the coverage of such events. Some of the people on the list may be included in the new cabinet, whose members were to appear before the Wolesi Jirga for trust vote on Wednesday. Their introduction to the house, nonetheless, was delayed until Saturday. President Hamid Karzai, while addressing a news conference last week, promised that 40 per cent of his cabinet picks would be introduced to the parliamentarians on or before Wednesday. Speaker Yunus Qanuni informed the house today the new cabinet members would appear before lawmakers on Saturday. Qanuni said his information was based on a conversation with the president. Qanuni warned if the ministers were not introduced on Dec. 19, the Wolesi Jirga would rise for its winter recess without waiting any longer. The parliament has delayed its winter vacation until the introduction of the new cabinet. Translated & edited by S. Mudassir Ali Shah
