KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai has called upon the Parliament to delay its winter recess to give him time to hand over the list of his new cabinet members for introduction.

Speaker Muhammad Yunus Qanuni told the Wolesi Jirga or Lower House on Monday that he spoke with the president on the phone and urged him to provide a list of his cabinet member at the earliest.

He said the president sought a week time, urging delay in the winter recess.

"It is the right of the house to make a decision on the recess," said Qanuni.

A lawmaker from Paktia, Gul Badshah Majeedi, said the cabinet should be announced as early as possible because the current acting ministers had no authority to approve mega budgets and projects.

He suggested the ministers should be introduced to the house one-by-one not at once to win a trust vote to avoid a chaotic situation.

Nader Khan Katawazai, another MP from Paktika, expressed concern over absence of some MPs from the house.

Monday's session was attended by only 30 of the 238 MPs.

Wadir Sapi, a political analyst and lecturer at the Kabul University's political science department said according to the law, the new cabinet should be announced within two weeks after the oath taking of the president.

He suggested the president should announce his cabinet and send it to the lower house for a trust vote without further delay.

The president was sworn into the office two weeks back at the Presidential Palace at a ceremony attended by hundreds of foreign dignitaries.

President Karzai declared the current cabinet as acting until a new cabinet is introduced, suspending their hiring and firing powers.
