JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The governor on Wednesday said he would try to increase coordination among donor agencies and government organisations in implementation of projects in eastern Nangarhar province.
Salim Khan Kunduzi was talking to UN Habitat officials during a meeting at the governor’s house, where they signed two projects worth around $400 million.
The UN Habitat would reconstruct pavements around the city and Qassam Abad Township besides constructing streets, culverts and cleaning irrigation canals as part of the projects.
One of the projects would cost $3 million and the other around $1 million. About 30km irrigation channels would be cleaned, 19 streets and around 500 culverts constructed, the governor explained.
“I want NGOs not to initiate projects independently,” he said, adding that he had discussed it with all NGOs working in Nangarhar and had asked them to coordinate with the departments concerned before initiating any project.
Dr Mathew French, UN Habitat country director for Afghanistan, said they wanted to facilitate people and benefit them in the long term through the projects.
He said the projects would be implemented with coordination of the municipality to facilitate people.
Acting Mayor Eng. Abdul Hakim said the projects would be initiated soon and 30 percent of the projects would be implemented in Qassam Abad Township and the rest in Jalalabad.
He said they would form village committees before launching the projects. However, he did not say when the projects would be completed.
Dr Nisar Kamawal, deputy head of the provincial council, asked the municipality to prioritise areas which needed such projects the most. He appreciated the UN Habitat for its continued support to the municipality.
