Weakening PCs to spur corruption, warns civil society

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Civil society organisations in southern Helmand province warned on Friday that corruption graph would go up if provincial councils were barred from supervising and evaluating the performance of local departments.
The civil society in Helmand expressed its concern over the Wolesi Jirga decision barring the provincial councils from overseeing local departments. At least 17 provincial councils (PCs) on Friday announced closing their offices for seven days as a token of protest.
Sardar Mohammad Hamdard, head of civil society networks in Helmand, told a press conference in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, that the power of oversight and evaluation should not be wrested from the councils.
“If the provincial councils do not oversee or evaluate the performance of local departments, corruption would become more rampant throughout the country,” he opined.
A day earlier, the lower house of parliament decided that provincial councils did not reserve the right to supervise or evaluate the performance of local departments.
