100 rebels killed in west: ANA official

HERAT CITY (PAN): Up to 100 insurgents have been killed and 130 others wounded during Afghan National Army (ANA)’s spring operations over the past three months in western Afghanistan, an official said on Sunday.
During the period, the ANA conducted a total of 41 operations in Herat, Badghis and Farah provinces, the 207th Zafar Military Crops commander Gen. Taj Mohammad Jahid told reporters in Herat City, adding summer operations had begun in the west.
Jahid said the troops had also suffered casualties in operations in the past three months, but gave no figures.
The military official said Afghan forces had devised special security plans for next year’s elections when foreign troops would play only a consultative role. However, he said foreign troops would assist Afghan counterparts in case of need.
Meanwhile, two policemen were killed and five others sustained injuries in a bomb blast in the Nadar Shahkot district of southeastern Khost province on Sunday.
The bomb was planted in a motorbike and was remotely detonated against a police vehicle in the Zanikhel area, the governor’s house said in a statement.
Governor Abdul Jabar Naeemi strongly condemned the attack on police during the holy month of Ramadan.
