Badakhshan has a total 29 administrative units--- a provincial capital and 28 districts.
The New Faizabad city is the capital of Badakhshan province, which is considered the center of administrative affairs. The old Faizabad city has historical importance, crowded markets and scenic beauty. The renowned Kokcha Fort contributed to the beauty of the city.
 
Wakhan:
Wakhan district is situated on extreme height, sharing borders with China and Tajikistan. It is one of the remote districts of the province.
Kyrgyzstan migrants have also settled here since long. The known Pamir Mountain range is situated in Wakhan which is considered among peak of the world.
The presence of wild animals such as deer and marco polo are in abundant in Pamir. A large number of local and foreign tourists visit the district every year.
Darwaza:
Sharing border with Tajikistan, Darwaza district has further five more mini districts including Mahami, Nasai, Shaki, Kofab and Khawahan.
Darwaza is located in northeastern part of Faizabad and has almost 100,000 populations.
The district is located to the northeast of Faizabad city having almost 100,000 inhabitants.
Darwaza has inaccessible and its roads are in dilapidated condition. It took more than three days for its residents to reach to Faizabad city, the capital of Badakhshan. Locals use mostly travel on horses back on zigzag and bumpy roads and they are facing immense troubles to carry foods and other commodities of daily use. 
In winter, roads remain blocked for almost six months and the highways are then cleared by the Department of Public Works and other organizations. Due to heavy snowfalls, linking roads remains closed for traffics.

Raghistan: (Ragh)
The Raghistan district includes Yawan, Raghistan and Kohistan districts, which is located to the north of Faizabad city on extreme bordered with China.
The district is generally called Ragh or Raghistan in 2005 when Kohistan and Yawan districts were included in the district. The district has cold weather amid heavy snowfall, disconnecting the locality from the provincial capital.
 
Kran and Manjan:
Kran and Manjan districts are widely popular for a precious stone known as lapis, which is used for jewels, other ornaments and decoration of homes.
Lapis has highest quality internationally, which can be found in Hindu Kosh mountainous range.
In the past, Badakhshan people complained government did not have control over the lapis coal mines.
Badakhshan residents said illegal demining and smuggling of the precious stones to neighboring countries continued without any check by the government.
Locals said illegal excavation of precious stones left negative impact on the locals’ economy. They demanded the government to adopt strict measures to stop smuggling of precious stones.    
Baharak: (Baharistan)
Baharak is considered an ancient locality and central district of Badakhshan province.
It achieved fame because of its strategic location from where transit facilities pass through the Silk Road.
The district has multiple cultural and art related activities. It has the credit of home to leading writers, poets and scholars who have remarkable achievements.
The province is known for its different tribes, languages, customs and traditions. The economy of the people depends on agriculture, livestock, business and other professions.
Baharak has pleasant weather. Its apples are popular locally and abroad. The Shuhada district is a green locality Badakshan province. The Zardib and Sarghailan areas are part of the district.
Most of its residents are associated with the occupation of agriculture and livestock. The district has vast orchards of walnuts, almond, berry, apple and other fruits, which are being exported locally and abroad.
 
The river flows on the periphery of Kokcha River. Its hygienic water is known country throughout the country. It residents are bound in strong well-netted social system who speak mainly Dari language.
 
Gurm:
 
Gurm district is located in the southeast of Faizabad city. The district has huge presence of militants but the situation has now improved to some extent.
The highest peak of Hindu Kosh with an elevation of 6,729 metres from the sea level is located in the district.
It is known for its wide green valley such as Farghaming, Kib, Kitib, Alrib, Farghamro, Khostak and Askan.
Khash:
 
Khash district is situated to the east of Faizabad city. It was recognized as a separate district back in 2005. Earlier, Kash was part of Gurm district.
 
Yaftal Pain:
 
Yaftal Pain district is situated to the north of provincial capital. It has 93 villages. The Yaftali dynasty had ruled Afghanistan from this region. It is the most suitable piece of land for the cultivation of vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplant, pumpkins, potatoes, cucumber and pepper.
 
Kasham:
 
The Kasham district is located southwest of Faizabad city. The district shares border with Farkhar and Kulfgan from the west, from south with Tagab district and from north with Kokcha River.
 
Kasham is the most beautiful district of Badakhshan province. Rice is the most cultivated crop of the district. Its people have comparatively stable economic condition.
 
The district has vast agricultural farms, high literacy rate, asphalted roads and other developments projects.
 
Argo:
 
Argo district lies to the west close to Faizabad city and recognizes its district status back in 2005. Earlier, the district was part of the provincial capital.
 
Agro has pleasant weather and occupied a strategic location. It receives heavy snowfall during winter while it has warm weather during spring and summer. The district is known for its delicious fruits, naturally grown herbal plants and hygienic water.
 
Drayam:
 
Drayam district is located in the northwest of Afghanistan between green mountainous valleys. The district receives vast rain-fed lands and hills.
It has green plains, vast gardens and abundant rivers. Its literacy rate is comparatively good. In addition, majority of students have access to religious education.
 
Dwellers of the district mostly speak Dari-Tajki in upper part of Drayam while in lower part of the district people speak Uzbeki.
 
Badakshan remained peaceful province in the current regime with the exception of Wardoj district where militants had great presence. The district witnessed some clashes between the security forces and militants.
 
Wardoj is located 50 kilometres north of Faizabad city, bordering with Nuristan and Panjsher province while from Chatralkotal, it shares border with Nuristan.
