Largely known as one of the lush green and mountainous provinces, Badakhshan is located in the northeastern region of Afghanistan. It shares border with Tajikistan, Pakistan and China.
Faizabad is the capital of Badakhshan.
Badakhshan is rich in natural resources with abundant in minerals Ruby and Azure reserves. The province has immense historical importance.
Badakhshan’s geographical location is between 70 degrees, four minutes and 36 seconds east and 36 degrees, 50 minutes and 16 seconds north.
The province is located 470-kilometres from Kabul, sharing border with Kunar, Laghman and Kapisa provinces to the south and Takhar to the west. Badakhshan is a mountainous province with snow covered mountains. The province has the Wakhan chain of mountains, Pamir and HinduKosh Mountains.
Badakhshan has a total 470 square kilometres area with a total population 400,000 (four hundred thousand).
Its weather is warm in summer while it is too cold in winter. Heavy snowfall causes most of its roads closed for six long months.
Badakhshan’s height is 1,800 above the sea level.
Districts:
The province has a total of 28 districts including Wakhan, Kishm, Baharak, Jurm, Yaftal Pain, Yaftal Bala, Ragh, Orgu, Darayem, Arghanchkhah, Nosi, Shoki, Mahami, Ishkashim, Khash, Khahan, Kofab, Kohistan, Kiran-o-Manjan, Shahr-e-Bozorg, Shoghnan, Shohada, Tabab, Tishkan, Worduj, Yamgan and Yawan-o-Zibak.
Majority of Badakhshan’s tribes are Sunni Hanafi but Shi’ites, Wahhabi and Ismalia Shi’ites are reside in the province.
Dams:
Some important dams of the province are: Kokcha River, Wakhan, Warduj, Tagab, Tangi Shiwa, Pamir, Jurm, Agherdah, Ghori Sang, Darwaz, Ragh, Zarqul and Chaqmaqin.
Badakhshan has adequate irrigation water. Agricultural lands are located low level areas with most of the land is irrigated through the Kokcha River.
Culture:
Badakhshan’s people have their own and different kind of culture. Their tradition varies because of its borders proximity with Tajikistan and China.
Hard work has been done to pay attention for the enrichment of culture and literature and prevent other languages. 
The provincial Culture and Information Department and the governor office extend their all out support to bolster literary and cultural activities and help conduct poetry sessions.
Badakhshan had the credit for giving birth to leading poets. Renowned Khasta, Raghi and Maghmoom Darwazi poets were hailing from the province.
While among its contemporary poets include Mir Bahadur Wasifi, Partaw Nadiri, Gul Noor Bahman, Shuja Khurasani, Kamaluddin Ghubra, Mir Ahmad Shah Zaigham, Makhfi Badakhshi, Mujib Mehrdad and Latif Paidram.
The widely lauded poem "The hand that doesn’t take your skirt is better to be broken” is one of the unique Dari lyric poems that Ms Makhfi Badakhsghi has written and Dr. Sadqif Fitrat (Nashinas) has sung the poem in a very impressive way.
In addition to composing and writing poems, almost every family is familiar how to write poems.
Hakim Nasir Khosru Balkhi, a renowned poet and philosopher, who spent much of his life in the province and wrote poems, was studying philosophy for years. The grave of the poet and cultural activist is located in Yamgan district where people come in large number to the shrine to pay homage.
Badakhshan is the birth place of leading singers with a widely known Bazgul Badakhshi who is expert of Afghanistan’s folk music.
Dur Mohammad Kishmi, Mir Maftun, Pahlawan Mangal, Ostad Shah Wali and many others among top singers.
Historical Sites:
As many as 21 historical sites are registered with the Information and Culture Department located in Faizabad and other districts. Among them Pul-e-Khisti of Kokcha River, Khirqa-e-Mobarak Graves of Miryari Beg, Mir Ghias and Hakim Nasir Khusru are widely known places that thousands of tourists visit every year.
Similarly, another 75 historical towers including Baharak, Ishkashim and Tobkhana ruins and Bala Hisar and Qala-e-Panja are also among the historical monuments.
Badakhshan has high mountains and roaring rivers. The most important mountains are Khaja Mohammad, Hazar Chashma and Safid Khirs. The peak of Hindukosh is called Naw Shakh.
The Pamir which is famous with the name of Roof of the world is located in Wakhan District at the border of China.
It’s most important natural resources are, in length of 47 kilometers and width of 47 kilometers, located in Yamgan District. Ruby mine is located in Serghilan District and Azure is in Kiran-o-Manjan District. 
Similarly Badakhshan has Iron and copper mines as well and in some areas, the people collect gold from river sands with local tools to lead their life.
Museum: 
Badakhshan has not any national museum in Badakshan. Because archaeological excavations had never been done before.
But in 2006, when a mass grave found in Dasht Qorgh of Faizabad city, a museum with the name of Shohada was established and the skulls of hundreds of the victims, had been killed in the reign of the communist regime, are maintained there now.  
Also there is a room for the maintaining of the remains of these victims which include beads, handcuffs, footwear, eyewear, men wear, female clothing etc.
Following the bodies was found in Badakhshan, Hamid Karzai visited Badakhshan and he directed to build a monument tower.
In the recent years, one statue and 70 beads (mohra), which indicate the industry of Badakhshan people dating 500 years back, also seized from smugglers and have been transferred to the ministry of Information and Culture but the historic items were returned back to Badakhshan and maintained safely. In addition, copies of the Holy Koran have been found in the grave of Hakim Nasir Khusruo and have been sent to the ministry of Information and culture.
Celebrities:
Badakhshan has had many well-known personalities such as Mirza Abdul Qadir Bedil, Abul Hassan Albadakhsh, Moulana Shahji Badakhshi, Moulana Abdullah Badakhshi, Jamshid Khan Shola, Moulana Ghiasi, Saeb Raghi, Mirza Raghi, Moulana Zirak Draimi and hundreds of other Islamic scholars in the past and now.
The political figures Wali Khan Derwazi Mushawer the successor of Amanullah Khan, Tahir Badakhshi, Ostad Burhanuddin Rabbani the Jihadi leader and other politicians are mentionable in the province.
Similarly Nosratullah Nusrat the player of Cricket, Miryar Beg Sahib Zadah, Mir Mohammad Shah, Mahbuballah Koshani, Mohammad Wali the prime minster of Amanullah Khan, Shah Wali the musician and Masuda Jalal the first lady candidate in the first presidential election.
The current writers, authors and poets include Nematullah Shahrani, Mohammad Musa Tawana, Dr.Qari Mohammad Ayaz, Mohammad Nazif Shahrani, Mohammad Mirwaiz Ghiasi, Qazi Abdul Haq, Abdul Bari Ibrahimi and Ostad Mohammad Khashi.
Similarly Moulana Nael Kishmi, Abdul Wedod Nael, Sowda, Yazdan yar, Wasil Latifi, Ghofran Badakhshi and Dr. Sebghatullah Khaksari are the contemporary poets.
Najibullah Dehzad the satire writer is also from Badakhshan. During a period of eight decades the Afghan constitution has also been drafted by a person from Badakhsi.
Shah Mohammad Wali Khan Derwazi, Abdullah Yaftali, Nimatullah Shahrani  and the largest spiritual and mysticism text "written by Imam Rabbani, Mojadad Alif Sani” has also been written by two Badakhshi writers.
Media:
Media in Badakhshan is developing each passing day. Currently there are 25 video, audio and print Media outlets in the province.
Radios: Radio Amu, Radio Kokcha, Radio Baharistan, Radio Sadae Kishm, Badakhshan local Radio and TV. Radio Bayan, Ariana FM and BBC, Arzo and Noor TV have broadcasts in the province. 
Magazines:  Sima-e-Badakhshan Magazine, Sima-e-Shahrwand Magazine, Good Governance Monthly, Faiz Abad Muncipality Monthly, Rawshanger Magazine and Sa Ud Magazine.
Education:
There are totally 650 schools across Badakhshan with 329 students including male and female. The students get education by two thousand staff and teachers.
There are 3 teacher training institutes and 32 Darul Ulom in Badakhshan.
Badakhshan has one university with more than 1500 students including females in the field of education, literature and agriculture faculties.
In accordance with a survey, 25% people of Badakhshan are literate and the rest are illiterate. Literacy programs are implemented for illiterate individuals by ministry of education and other related organizations in Badakhshan.
Industry:
Traditional handicraft in Badakhshan include burlap weaving, Kilim weaving, Chakman weaving, Qaqma weaving, Alcha weaving, goldsmith, blacksmith, coppersmith, brogan, shoemaking, pottery, architecture, carpentry, embroidery and many more handicrafts made by women.
In recent years the government pays attention to the development of domestic productions and industries; and currently hundreds of ladies are engaged in women vocational projects.
Similarly every year exhibitions for marketing of women handicrafts established in Badakhshan.
Azure in Kiran-o-Manjan extracted in Kiran-o-Manjan District which is located to the west of Kokcha River and gold is collected from Zarshoyan area of Kokcha River.
Agriculture:
Majority of people in Badakhshan are farmers. They grow rice, wheat, barley, rye, maize, millet and fava bean.
The province has more than 390 irrigable and 600 thousand rain-fed hectares land.
Fruit in Badakhshan include walnut, berry, apricot, cherry; apple, almond and many more in mountainous areas of Badakhshan.
Jungles:
Fir forests in the highlands of Badakhshan include conifers, oak, pistachio and Pinus. Smooth plane points, willow, fruit trees, almonds, cumin seeds and sea-buckthorn.
Sport:
Sport is common in Badakhshan like other provinces. Football, taekwondo, judo, ping pong, basketball, cricket, and taekwondo, a gymnasium, Judo, bodybuilding and chess are popular.
Currently 24 athletic federations are functioning in Olympic Directorate and thousand of athletes are engaged in sports.
In the recent years the number of females who play volleyball and cricket are growing in Badakhshan. Athletes welcomed by local authorities and people and therefore, youth have had the pride of wining of national and internationals competitions in recent years.
