Khost province is located in the southeast of Afghanistan and is located at 69 degree, 39 minutes and 58 seconds longitude and in the north latitude at 33 degree, 5 minutes and 24 seconds.
 In the north and east it borders with Paktia province, while in south it borders with Paktika province and on the other side of the Duran Line the North Waziristan and Kurma Agency where Saidgi and Wazir tribes live.
According Amid Dictiornary, literally Khost means island and based on the folklore sayings the water stream from Mangal, Zadran and Tani would accumulate in Khost and there was no route to flow.
Khost was one of the biggest district of Paktia province while the current districts were sub districts and during Dr. Najibullah regime Khost district was promoted to a province. The province has three administrative units Shamal, Maton, Laknu, and  twelve districts including Sapiri, Dwa Manda, Nader Shah Kot, Ismail Khail, Mandozai, Tani, Garbaz, Alisher, Sabari, Baak, Zazai Maidan, Musa Khail and Qalandar.
 12 small and big Pashtun tribes live in Khost province including Mangal, Zadran, Tani, Sabari, Gurbaz, Maton, Lakan, Alisher, Tarizi, Babakarkhil, Ghelji, Ismailkhil, Mandozi and Zazai.
 Culture:
The organized cultural activities began in Khost province in 1997 with the establishment of the independent literal society which led to the emergence of poets, culturists and writers, then other literal centers were established in lakan area named Muhammad Sediq Ruhi and Abdul Bari Jahani in Alisher district.
Currently there are 15 cultural societies in Khost province and each one is active in various gathering, poetry and publishing books.
A poetry has began in Khost province for last four years, the poetry named Chinar (sycamore) in which poets from various provinces and cross borders poets attend it in Khost city.
Recently the culture of reading increased; therefore some libraries have been established in the province. In addition to Department of information and culture and Shaikh Zaid universities, some other cultural societies were able to establish some libraries. In addition there are 12 bookstores in Khost city in which many books and magazines are sold.
The department of information and culture of Khost province also has a museum in which artifacts which are rare, currently about 300 items are in the museum.
There are 14 calligraphy and fine arts courses  in which many  youths are being trained, the common musical instruments are drum, pipe and others. There are 13 music bands in Khost province and conduct concerts and attend in the wedding parties.
Attan (national dance) is a very traditional dance of grand Paktia and Khost province.

Media:
The first published magazine in Khost province was Ghazi, which had publication in Khost province during King Amanullah Khan, there is only a single issue of the magazine at Khost Museum.
The government radio of Khost province was established in 1982 and the TV started broadcasting in  1986.  The first independent radio in Khost province was established in 2002 named Peace radio.  Now there are radios such az Public voice, Convey of Hopes, Killid and other radios on FM. In last two years a private radio/TV station named Gharkhaght has been established.
Khost Magazine which is a government publication was published in 1999, and then several other magazines started publishing including Samon, Zhmana, Sawdagar, Paiwaston, however currently only Paiwaston has publication.
Mazal, Biri, Gam, Almas, Zango, Azanga, Ghag, Alwikh, Ghumbasa, Islam Ghag, Mujahid Ghag, Zwak, Zalmai, Parmakhtag, Mastarbal, Nawi Gam and some other magazines have been published, but most of these were for short time, only a few has publication.
The first daily was Brikhna which started publication in Khost city and currently a daily named Malie Ehsas has publication and is government owned daily.
National TV, Lemar, Tolo, Ariana, Shamshad TVs have broadcasting in Khost province.
Azadi radio, Mashal, BBC, Dewa, Arman and Arakozia radios can be heard in FM.
Education:
There are 291 schools in Khost province in which 143 are primary, 61 secondary and 87 high schools. In total 209542 students are enrolled at schools in which 75432 are female and 5511 teachers deliver the teaching services in the province.
Pedagogy:
The Khost Pedagogy has 1060 students with 20 per cent female students and the teaching is carried out by 42 lecturers.
Private high schools:
There are 13 private high schools in Khost province; in which 5799 students are enrolled among the number 289 are girls.
Religious seminaries:
There are 21 religious seminaries in Khost province where 3400 students are enrolled and receive education from 114 teachers. Only 13 of the 21 seminaries are registered with the government.
University:
Khost University known as Shaikh Zaid University was established in 2002. The university has ten departments (medicine, engineering, Political science, economy, education, journalism, literature, sharia law and computer science).
In 2012 the university had 5700 students with 160 teachers. Since the establishment the university graduated 1915 students, 60 lecturers of the university had done MA and PHD in abroad countries.
Agriculture:
As Khost province is located in the mountainous area, but still it has good farming land. The mountains of Khost has fuel timber trees and also fruit producing trees, such as Pine fruits, olive, walnuts and others.  These trees are wild and no one care about them.  In addition maize, wheat, peanuts and vegetable are also grown in the province.
Handcracts:
There are various handcrafts like prayer mate, table sheet and other typical items which are very popular locally.
Almost all of the handcrafts are produced by women, the products play instrumental role in the family economy. Blankets are one of the most popular products.
