KABUL (Pajhwok): Some Mesharano Jirga or Senate members on Sunday criticised Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for asking the Afghan government to review its policy about the neighbouring country.
Speaking in Washington on Friday, a day after talks with US President Barack Obama, Nawaz had said that Pakistan was ready to help Afghanistan revive peace talks with Taliban rebels.
“I have again conveyed to President (Ashraf) Ghani that, if he desires, we are prepared, to assist in reviving the talks between Kabul and the Afghan Taliban. But we cannot bring them to the table and be asked to kill them at the same time,” Sharif had said.
Senator Sher Mohammad Akhunzada said Afghanistan had never asked Pakistan to eliminate the Taliban, but Islamabad was always asked to stop equipping and supporting them.
He said the Pakistani government had never been sincere with Kabul as evident from 21 unsuccessful state visits to Islamabad by former president Hamid Karzai.
The lawmaker asked the Afghan government to reconsider its policy towards Pakistan because Islamabad was working for American interest and supported terrorism in Afghanistan.
Nisar Haris, another lawmaker, lambasted Pakistan’s policies regarding Afghanistan and said the US might have encouraged Pakistani officials to play active role in the Afghan peace process, but Islamabad would never honour its commitment in connection with peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Senator Faisal Sami said: “We had told the government earlier that cementing ties with Pakistan is not a right option.” He said the efforts of former president and incumbent president had failed to yield any positive results.
Senate Chairman Fazl Hadi Muslimyar said: “We never asked Pakistan to kill Taliban nor they did so. Islamabad is directly involved in the massacre of Afghans.”
He said the president and the CEO had been told to be careful about their politics regarding Pakistan because the country had never been sincere with the Afghans.
