PC members hint to end strike, resume work

KABUL (Pajhwok): Following presidential decree empowering provincial councils to evaluate the performance of local departments, council members announced on Sunday to end their month-long strikes and resume work.
On January 28, the lower house of parliament barred provincial council members from overseeing the performance of local departments. Earlier, the council of ministers headed by the president decided to take back the overseeing and evaluation powers of provincial councils.
Sayed Abul Rahman, head of Kabul provincial council, announced end of their strike at a press conference. He said: “After president’s decree giving us evaluation powers back, we (all PCs across the country) decided to reopen our offices and resume work.”
Sayed Ahmad Silab, Kandahar council member, said earlier they met with Vice-President Sarwar Danish and were given the presidential decree. “After we met Danish and received the decree we decided to reopen councils,” he added.
Based on the decree, the president has asked the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) to facilitate the implementation of the oversight authority of provincial councils.
