Ghani hopes peace effort to yield result

KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday travelled to the Yahyakhel district of southeastern Paktika province to meet relatives of the victims of a suicide attack on a volleyball tournament.

On Nov 23, a suicide bomber attacked crowds watching the final match of an inter-district volleyball tournament, killing more than 60 people and injuring 84 others.

President Ghani, addressing a gathering in Yahyakhel, strongly condemned the attack as inhuman and un-Islamic. The president promised the government would extend all possible support to families of the victims.

He said he had settled down things on the international level for peace in Afghanistan and hoped his efforts would yield positive results.

Ghani said he had held talks on peace with leaders of other countries besides neighbouring nations.

The president also promised drastic change in the leadership of Paktika province for the sake of good governance. He announced to construct the Sharan-Argun road.

Tribal elders urged the president to give more attention to the impoverished province and maintain uniform development among provinces.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people took to the streets in Sharan, the provincial capital, urging the president to remove provincial administration and military officials.

One of the protestors, Samiullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News insecurity in Paktika had increased due to inefficiency, corruption and mismanagement of local officials.

Chanting slogans against provincial officials, the protestors asked the president to fire and prosecute provincial officials.
