Final decision on PC poll results today: Watchdog

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Thursday said it had addressed all complaints from provincial council candidates and would share its final decision with the Independent Election Commission (IEC) later in the day.

IECC spokesman Mohammad Nader Mohsini told Pajhwok Afghan News the final results from the provincial council elections would be sent to the IEC office on Thursday afternoon.

Mohsini did not provide further details about the progress in compiling the final results, but said complete information in this regard would be provided at a news conference later today.

The provincial council elections were held simultaneously with the first round of presidential elections on April 5. About 2,600 candidates, including 308 females, contested the elections.

Addressing the complaints from provincial council candidates was suspended due to the deadlocked second round of presidential elections, but the process resumed on Aug 16 after a month long delay.

As many as 458 candidates, including 97 women, have been declared successful in the preliminary results announced on May 20.

It is unclear as to when the IEC will announce the final result from the provincial council polls. Pajhwok tried to contact IEC officials about final results but denied information.

Final results were to be released on June 17, but hit another snag after the presidential election deadlock and the subsequent nationwide vote audit prolonged.
