One polling site stays shut in Nuristan

PARON (Pajhwok): Only one of the 37 polling centres across eastern Nuristan province remained closed on Saturday, thanks to people’s cooperation with the authorities, the governor said.

Residents had assisted the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in transferring electoral materials to polling sites, Hafiz Abdul Qayyum told Pajhwok Afghan News after casting his vote at a polling centre in Paroon, the provincial capital.
The governor urged the masses to exercise their constitutional right in the crucial and decisive phase of presidential election. He said the voting process in Nuristan was smoothly underway and so far no untoward incident had been reported from any part of the province.
However, IEC head in Nuristan Izzatullah Halim said a polling centre in the Waigal district could not be open due to insecurity and failure to transfer election materials.
In the April 5 elections, he said, about 70,000 people had cast their votes in Nuristan, where the turnout seemed to be more widespread this time.
