Qayyum to preserve gainsof past decade

KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai's elder brother and presidential candidate Abdul Qayyum Karzai on Sunday promised to preserve the gains made over the past decade and pursue the current government’s incomplete jobs.
Addressing thousands of supporters on the opening day of election campaign at the Loya Jirga tent, Qayyum said, if elected, he would introduce reforms in the government system, create employment opportunities and make efforts at economic development.
A large number of parliamentarians were also present at the gathering. Qayyum vowed to stabilise Afghanistan and promised an end to the ongoing war, saying he would bring the rebels to the negotiating table to establish a lasting peace.
Promising serious efforts at combating drugs and administrative corruption, the former Wolesi Jirga member said achieving economic growth and ensuring the supremacy of rule would be among his priorities.
He believed modern education system could bring about revolution by offering a well-trained, educated and aware society, something crucial to improvement in the country’s system.
Creating jobs and raising public servant salaries were among the promises Qayum held out to the gathering, saying he would struggle hard to translate his pledges into reality.
