KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai on Thursday described next year’s presidential vote as important for the country’s future, urging all Afghans to actively participate in the elections.
In a radio address to the nation, he said: “Voter registration for the third presidential ballot has got under way. The Afghans will elect a new head of state next year.”
The people would be discharging a key national obligation by exercising their franchise right in April 2014, the president said, asking all adult Afghans to get their voter cards.
Since those without cards would not be able to cast ballots, all Afghans who recently reached the age of 18 years should visit registration centres to get voter cards, he explained.
Karzai said: “The Afghans who have lost their cards or recently returned to the country should also approach registration centres for voter cards.”
The Independent Election Commission was duty-bound to increase the number of registration centres across the country to enable all compatriots to take part in the elections.
