GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Ghazni provincial council members, disputing over a recent vote, differed on who should get the key posts of the elective body's chief, deputy head and secretary. The council voted last Thursday on allotting the slots but the exercised prompted opposition from 10 council members. They denounced the appointments the result of fraud. On Saturday, the 10 members rejected the elections as a deeply flawed exercise and insisted they should be given their due rights based on a fresh and transparent ballot. Female member Bakht Bibi Rahimi said voters were supposed only to put a tick or a cross on the ballot paper. But they signed the papers in flagrant violation of laws. The Ghazni provincial council has long been haunted by controversy. The 19-member council is functioning without a proper office, because the building was closed last year after members developed differences with Governor Dr Mohammad Osman Osmani. But Abdul Wali Khanzada, another member of the council, called the election transparent and said some groups opposed the vote just because they wanted corrupt people to occupy the posts and thus pave the way for their illegal activities. On the other hand, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) director argued the election was attended by all members and was very much fair. Nazir Hussain Nabizada said if some members disagreed on the decision, they could take their case to the Electoral Complaints Commission. ss/mud
