MEHTARLAM, (PAN): Four voters including a woman were wounded in separate rebel attacks in Alishing district of eastern Laghman province, officials said Thursday.

Muhammad Qasem Ahmadi, administrative chief of Alishing district, told Pajhwok Afghan News Taliban militants opened fire on the people going to polling centers in Qalai-e-Nagil area.

Three voters who sustained injuries in the attack were rushed to a nearby hospital, he said, pointing out the guerrillas had warned against opening the polling centre in another area. As a result of the threat, polling centres opened at

He said the Taliban opened fire at the polling centre shortly after it was opened. A female voter was wounded in the firing. The district chief said nothing about her condition.

Muhammad Hassan Yaqubi, district police chief, said violent incidents were reported from Salab, Watan Gato and a number of other areas.

An election observer in Alishing, Samiullah, said three polling centres were closed in the district. But the district chief said two of the centres opened after a three hours delay.

Meanwhile, a rocket landed near a polling center in Mehtarlam, the provincial capital. Despite the incidents, voting in Mehtarlam was going on but the turnout was less than expected.
