Thousands pledge support to Ahmadzai

KABUL (Pajhwok): Thousands of residents gathered in the capital Kabul on Tuesday, pledging support to front-line presidential runner Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.
The gathering was attended by former interior minister Ali Ahmad Jalali, Right and Justice Party leader Mohammad Hanif Atmar, ex-minister of economy Anwarul Haq Ahadi, a number of politicians and tribal elders.
Prof. Hamidullah Farooqi, Ahmadzai’s election campaign chief in Kabul, said thousands of residents had pledged to vote for the ex-finance minister, who had the ability to put the country on the road to progress and prosperity.
Afghans realised the need for supporting a candidate with clear plans for economic development, peace and stability in the country, he added.
Ahmadzai, speaking on the occasion, said: “Afghanistan is now a democratic country and the government should resolve problems being faced by the people.”
He went on to say: “My aim is to stabilise the democratic system. We will hold accountable those individuals who are involved in damaging the national interest.”
He said freedom of speech was important for the development of any society but its misuse would never be allowed.
He stressed introducing measures to eliminate land grab, kidnappings and mafia groups. He would take steps to stop violence against women.
