7,000 soldiers to perform poll duty in north

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A military commander on Monday said 7,000 Afghan National Army (ANA) troops would be deployed to assist other security forces in maintaining security during and after the April 5 elections in the northern zone.
Gen. Zalmai Weesa, the 209th Shaheen Military Corps commander in the north, told a ceremony marking the launch of the troops’ election duty that the 7000 service members would be enough to do the task.
Security on the election day (April 5) would be satisfactory, he said at the ceremony in Mazar-i-Sharif. Another 5,000 soldiers would be on standby to meet an emergency situation.
Gen. Weesa said military operations had already been conducted in the Warduj district of Badakhshan, Faryab’s Ghormach, Qaisar and Almar districts, Balkh’s Chamtal, Chahar Bolak and Albarz Hill and Tala wa Barfak town of Baghlan.
He claimed the areas had been cleared of insurgents and the security situation had improved. The commander demanded people’s cooperation in preventing Afghanistan’s enemies trying to sabotage the elections.
