CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Tuesday said 18 polling stations were under high security threat in central Parwan province.
Regional IEC chief, Sultan Mohammad Nizai, told Pajhwok Afghan News the polling centres in Shinwari, Siah Gird and Koh-i-Safi districts faced greater threat from insurgents.
“Eighteen of 156 polling stations where 600 voters could vote in each polling station are under direct militants’ threat,” Niazai said, adding the situations were of grave concern in the wake of April 5 elections.
Provincial police chief, Khalilullah Ziayee, acknowledged some polling stations were facing security threat but said security threats had been decreased following actions by the Afghan security forces.
“Some polling stations were under high security threats, but the threats have been reduced with the help of local elders and security forces,” he said, adding security forces would adopt every measure to control the situation before the elections.
Earlier, the Ministry of Interior announced that it could not ensure security for 400 polling stations due to security threats in some areas of the country.
But the ministry assured to maintain tight security of around 6,431 polling stations where people would vote without fear.
Recently Taliban militants have warned Afghan government they would disrupt elections and prevent people from going to poll their votes.
But the ministry rejected the warnings as militants’ propaganda campaign.
