KABUL (PAN): The Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of parliament, has postponed its winter recess until new cabinet members, who may be named by President Hamid Karzai in the next few days, get the vote of confidence.

Earlier, parliament was scheduled to rise for the winter recess for 45 days. However, First Deputy of Wolesi Jirga Mirwais Yasini, who chaired Saturday's session, said the house would receive the list of cabinet ministers on Tuesday.

Several members opposed the decision that was supported by a majority of lawmakers. Khalid Pashtun, public representative from Kandahar, said the session should not be postponed. He said it was an important issue that not be left unaddressed.

But Shukria Barakzai, a Wolesi Jirga member from Kabul, supported the move and said the trust vote was important. The vote of confidence should take place before the adjournment of the session.

She added some ministers, unsure of their inclusion in the new cabinet, were making last-ditch efforts to retain their portfolios.

Alam Gul Kochi believed there should be no hurry in giving trust vote to cabinet members. He thought the vote should be delayed till the end of the winter vacation.

Public representative from Ghazni Daud Sultanzoy also opposed the move and said there was no sign of cabinet members being named. He saw reason for postponing the recess. Under the constitution, the Wolesi Jirga has to work for nine months a year.
