More than 50,000 get voter cards in Paktika

SHARAN (PAN): Independent Election Commission (IEC) officials on Monday said 52,522 individuals, including 24,594 women, had obtained voter cards in southeastern Paktika province.
IEC chief for the province, Zarab Shah, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 2,000 people, including 900 women, had been issued with voter cards only in Sharan, the provincial capital.
Although voter registration centres had been closes in districts, residents could go to Sharan to get their cards, the official said. “Currently there are no concerns as security forces are assisting us.”
But residents of Zirok, Matakhan and Gayan districts did not evince any interest in registering for voter cards even when the centres were functional.
A resident of Khairkot district, Faiz Mohammad, said most people, including women, had got voter cards.
A dweller of Sharan, Ghulam Farooq, also said there were no security threats. He and his family members obtained voter cards within an hour, the man added.
