LASHKARGAH (PAN): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday said 12,000 individuals, including 2,000 women, had received voter registration cards in the Greshk district of southern Helmand province.
IEC chief for Helmand, Qudratullah Naqshbandi, told a gathering involving hundreds of women in the district the participation of women in the registration campaign had been satisfactory.
He said women constituted a major part of a community and their participation in the elections process was crucial like men’s.
The election official said voter registration centres had been closes in districts, but still missed out residents could go to Lashkargah to get cards there.
Deputy Governor Ahmad Massoud Bakhtawar, who also attended the gathering, asked Greshk residents to fully participate in the April 5 elections and vote for their preferred candidates.
He said Afghan security forces would remain high alert on the Election Day to prevent any possible untoward incident.
A participant, Shah Gul, said women’s participation in elections was important because they had been the worst affected in the decades-long violence.
