KABUL (PAN): The final results from the August 20 presidential polls show that President Hamid Karzai had won leading position in 21, his close rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in 11 and Dr. Ramzan Bashardost in one province.



The figures revealed by the Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (AIEC) say a total of 5,918,741 votes were polled all over the country. Of those, 5,662,757 were found valid, 173,200 were invalid while 82,783 were polled to candidates who withdrew from the race.


According to the results released by the AIEC, Hamid Karzai got 54.62, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah 27.75, Ramzan Bashardost 9.2 and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai obtained 2.74 per cent votes.


Among the valid votes, Hamid Karzai got 3,093,256, Dr. Abdullah 1,571,581, Ramzan Bashardost 520,627, Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai 155,343, Mirwais Yasini 50,461, Shah Nawaz Tanai 33,544 and Frozan Fana got 24,289 votes.


Rest of the hopefuls, including Dr. Habib Mangal, Mullah Abdul Salam Rocketi, Mutasim Billah Mazhabi, Muhammad Sarwar Ahmadzai, Abdul Latif Pidram, Said Jalal Karim and Shehla Atta bagged between 11,000 to 23,000 votes. Both Mehboobullah Koshani and Al-Haj Abdul Ghafoor got more than 10,000 votes.


Others, including Al-Haj Rahim Jan Fi Sabeelillah, Abdul Jabbar Sabit, Muhammad Hashim Taufeeqi, Professor Ghulam Farouq Nijrabi, Bismillah Sher, Abdul Haseeb Aryan, Eng. Mueenuddin Al-Mufti, Mullah Ghulam Muhammad Regi, Gul Ahmad Yama and Muhammad Akbar Orya got from 3,000 to over 7,000 votes.


In the same token, Bashir Ahmad Bezan, Sangeen Muhammad Rahmani and Zaiul Haq Hafizi to more than 1,000 votes each. The province-wise position of some of the leading candidates is as under: Kabul: Hamid Karzai is leading with 55 per cent votes following by Dr. Abdullah with 24.6 and Ramzan Bashardost with 12.9.


Wardak: Hamid Karzai got 63.2 per cent votes while Ramzan Bashardost and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai followed him with 18.3 and 7.9 votes respectively.


Logar: The incumebent president led the rest with 43.1% while Bashardost and Dr. Abdullah got 19% and 16.7% votes. Ghazni: President Karzai bagged 42.9% votes followed by Bashardost with 42.5 and Dr. Abdullah with 6.7% .


Paktika and Paktia: Karzai also stood first in the two southeastern provinces with 91.1 and 82.6% votes. Dr. Abdullah stood second in Paktika with 4.5% followed by Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai with 1% votes.


Ahmadzai remained second to Karzai in Paktia with 6.5% votes followed by Dr. Habib Mangal with 4.2%.


Khost: Hamid Karzai won 83% votes in Khost where he was seconded by Shah Nawaz Tanai with 5.5% and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai with 4.7 per cent votes.


Nangarhar: Karzai led the rest with 72.2% votes followed by Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai with 6.4% and Dr. Abdullah with 6.2 per cent votes.


Kunar: A total of 82.7 per cent voters favoured Karzai in this eastern province while Dr. Abdullah bagged 6.7% and Ashraf Ghani ended with 3.2 per cent votes.


Laghman: A total of 79.9% votes were polled in favour of President Karzai in Laghman where Dr. Abdullah got 10.6 and Ashraf Ghani one per cent votes.


Nuristan: Hamid Karzai obtained 44.4% ballots while Dr. Abdullah and Zabeehullah Ghazni Nuristani collected 44.1 and eight per cent votes respectively.


Herat: President Karzai again stood first with 48.6% votes in this western province where Dr. Abdullah got 37.9% and Ramzan Bashardost 5.2% votes.


Farah: Hamid Karzai won the race here with 71.9 per cent votes followed by Dr. Abdullah with 14.3 per cent and Ashraf Ghani with 8.8% votes.


Nimroz: Karzai led the race here with 82.3% votes while Dr. Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani ended up with 8.8 and 2.7% votes.


Helmand: Hamid Karzai got 83.7 per cent votes in this lawless area where Ashraf Ghani got 3.9 and Dr. Abdullah 3.1% valid votes.


Kandahar: The incumbent president did well with 87.6% votes in his native province followed by Ashraf Ghani with 4.7 and Dr. Abdullah with 3.7% votes.


Zabul: Hamid Karzai won 29.7 per cent votes, while Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah got 9.8 and 8.7% respectively.


Uruzgan: Like Zabul, turn out in Uruzgan remained low where Karzai collected 29.1%, Ramzan Bashardost 12.2% and Dr. Abdullah 6.8% votes.


Jawzjan: Karzai did well in this northern province with 57.4 per cent votes while his rival Dr. Abdullah got 25.2% and Bashardost 4.1 per cent votes.


Sar-e-Pul: Hamid Karzai continued his lead in this province with 45.5% votes followed by Dr. Abdullah with 32% and Bashardost with 12.1% votes.


Faryab: The president won 57.4% votes here followed by Bashardost with 37.4% and Dr. Abdullah with 19% votes.


Bamyan: Karzai narrowly led his third rival Bashardost in this remote province by gaining 37.5% votes while the latter got 37.4%. The president's key rival Dr. Abdullah got 19% votes in this province inhabited by the ethnic Hazara population.


Kapisa: Dr. Abdullah got 80.7% votes here followed by Karzai with 7.7% and Professor Dr. Ghulam Farouq Nijrabi with 2.3% votes.


Parwan: Dr. Abdullah got 63% votes here while Hamid Karzai ended up with 7.8% and Bashardost with 5%.


Badakhshan: Dr. Abdullah led the race here with 51% votes followed by Hamid Karzai with 33.6% and Mirwais Yasini with four per cent.Takhar: Dr. Abdullah won 52.2% votes while Hamid Karzai got 32.1% and Bashardost 3.2% here.


Baghlan: A total of 59.7% votes were bagged by Dr. Abdullah here while Karzai got 32.1% and Bashardost 6.4% votes.


Kunduz: Dr. Abdullah got 55.3% votes followed by Hamid Karzai with 31.2 per cent and Bashardost with six per cent in this northern province.


Samangan: Dr. Abdullah won 47.9% votes, while the incumbent present stayed second with 39.2% and Bashardost stood third with 8.4% votes.


Balkh: Dr. Abdullah won 46%, Karzai 37.7% and Bashardost 10.8% votes in this northern province.


Badghis: A total of 54.7 per cent voters favoured Abdullah, 38.1% supported Karzai and only 2.3% votes were given to Al-Haj Abdul Ghafoor Zoori here.


Panjsher: Being the stronghold of former commander Ahmad Shah Masoud, Dr. Abullah, who served spokesman for Masoud-led northern alliance, got 70% votes in this mountainous province followed by hamid Karzai with 27.4% and Ashraf Ghani with 0.7% votes.


Ghor: This is another province where Dr. Abdullah led Hamid Karzai with 62.3% votes. Karzai got 28.4% and Bashardost 9.6% votes.


Daikundi: Ramzan Bashardost led the rest here with 62.3% votes. He was followed by Hamid Karzai with 28.4% and Dr. Abdullah with 6.1% votes.


According to the AIEC, the final official results of the elections were expected to announce by mid-September. However, it was delayed mainly because of an overwhelming number of complaints regarding stuffing of votes in the ballot boxes and fraud allegations by the rival candidates.


Sources said the the AIEC had quarantined 2.15% votes from 600 polling stations so far.
