Poll security in north, northeast discussed

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Senior officials from northern and northeastern provinces on Wednesday held a meeting behind closed doors in Balkh province to discuss security for next year’s elections.
Journalists were barred from covering the meeting that took place at the governor’s house in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital.
But Deputy Minister of Interior Ayub Salangi, who attended the meeting, told reporters they conferred on the security measures taken in northern and northeastern provinces in the lead-up to the April 5 presidential and provincial council elections.
He said reports presented at the meeting by security officials depicted the overall situation in the region had improved. He added efforts were being made to ensure peace during elections in Warduj and Karan-o-Marjan districts of Badakhshan province.
Salangi said the meeting also discussed security for female election staff and vehicles shifting materials to districts. Over the next six months, efforts would be made to overcome security-related challenges in line with the reports.
