Nangarhar provincial council, govt at odds

JALALABAD (PAN): Members of the Nangarhar provincial council on Wednesday accused government officials of refusing to cooperate with them.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, the deputy council chief, Mueed Shah Haqqani, said there had been a lack of coordination between the government administration and the council.
"We have a lot differences with government officials, who are least moved by our suggestions on public-interest issues; even they don't respect the council itself," he alleged.
Haqqani said the council had time and again called for rooting out corruption in government departments, but no appropriate action had been taken so far.
Zabit Amir Mohammad, a member of the council, said there was an atmosphere of distrust between them and government officials. He also blamed Wolesi Jirga members of holding secret meetings with provincial officials.
Deputy Governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal confirmed the differences, saying the rows were intensifying with time. "Usually, the government doesn't invite council members to official ceremonies."
Dr. Mukhlis Ahmad, a political analyst, said differences between the two organs were having a negative impact on society. He said the tiffs had further widened the gap between the government and the people.
