Police chief Brigadier General Aziz Ahmad Wardak told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident occurred near the Abdul Hai Gardezi High school where a polling centre is established. However, he said the dead persons were not suicide bombers and were carrying the explosives to somewhere else.

He said they were killed by their own explosives and their bodies had been shifted to the Red Crescent Centre in the province.

A police officer said, on condition of anonymity, said the dead were residents of Deh Bala village in Gardez city.

He added the motorcyclists were shifting explosives to another place in the city. “When police signaled then to stop they exploded their explosives,” he said.

After the blast, voters at the polling station started fleeing, he added.

Elsewhere in the central province of Logar, a tribal elder was killed when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle in Pul-i-Alam on Thursday.

Police chief Ghulam Mustafa Mohsini said the tribal elder named Zer Gul was killed when a land-mine blasted between Slak and Pyarukhel areas of the city this morning.

Deputy provincial council head Abdullah Ahmadzai said Zer Gul was an elder of Aldinkhel tribe. He added the blast also killed a villager accompanying the elder.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said they had planted mines in different areas of the province.
