KABUL (PAN): The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology on Saturday said technical aspects of launching the new computerised identity cards distribution had been completed, but the Meshrano Jirga was yet to approve the population census law.
Talking to Pajhwok, the ministry spokesman, Nasrat Rahimi, hoped the upper house would pass the law soon and would be endorsed by the president in order the process of issuing computerized ID cards could be launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior.
Aimed at preventing issuance of forged computerised ID cards, the draft was presented by the Ministry of Justice in March. It comprises seven chapters and 39 articles. Under the law, computerised ID cards will be issued to all Afghans in three phases.
After a long debate the Wolesi Jirga passed the controversial law in July and sent the draft law to the Senate for approval.
Interior Ministry spokesman Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui also urged the Meshrano Jirga to pass the law as soon as possible because it would allow them to embark on distributing ID cards to the people.
