IDPs get carpet-weaving equipment

SHIBERGHAN (PAN): Up to 225 families of internally displaced persons (IDPs) were given carpet-weaving material in the northern province of Jawzjan, officials said on Tuesday.
The assistance was provided by the Department of Refugees with the support of the United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Director of Refugee and Repatriation Eng. Abdul Karim told Pajhwok Afghan News the recipients had been displaced from Qush Tepa and Darzab districts due to insecurity there over the past two years.
Each family received a carpet-weaving machine, a chair, two bags of sheep fur, a bucket and related equipment, he said, adding the households had already been trained on how to operate the machines.
The aid worth $50,000 was provided by UNHCR and would help people to stabilise their economic positions, the official added.
Tordi Khal, a 55 years old woman from Darzab, said they would use the tools and other items to improve their economy. She asked the government and welfare organisations to continue such programmes for them.
Such programmes have been successful in other provinces, said the UNHCR spokesman in the province, Fahim Hamdard. The programme would be expanded if it proved effective in Jawzjan, he concluded.
