KABUL (PAN): The UN secretary-general has urged all Afghan women and men eligible to vote to cast their ballot in Thursday's presidential and provincial council elections.

By participating in the elections, Ban Ki-moon noted, the Afghan people would help their country strengthen its democratic institutions, bring fresh vigour to its political life and ultimately reaffirm their commitment to contribute to the peace and prosperity of their nation.

In a statement from the UN mission in Kabul, Ban called on all candidates, their supporters, political party agents and domestic and international observers to continue to cooperate with the Independent Election Commission.

The secretary-general also desired cooperation with other relevant Afghan institutions and international stakeholders supporting electoral preparations to ensure a smooth and successful poll process.
