GAHZNI CITY (PAN): A convoy carrying electoral materials for Thursday’s elections was attacked by Taliban insurgents in the southern volatile Ghazni province, an official said on Tuesday, with four policemen wounded.

Police headquarters chief Khyalbaz Sherzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the guerrillas attacked the convoy on its way to Maktab - a remote area of Qarabagh district - earlier this afternoon. Four policemen were wounded in the attack, he explained.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has claimed responsibility for the assault. He said their fighters destroyed three police ranger pick-up, killing and wounding several police.

In neighbouring Logar province, suspected militants fired rockets into Baraki Barak district late Monday night, damaging a school that to be used as polling station for Thursday’s presidential and provincial council elections.

Governor’s spokesman Din Muhammad Darvish confirmed the attack, saying the rockets hit the Ghazi Muhammad Jan Khan High School. A second rocket landed at Shahi Qala High School, on the outskirts of the capital city.

Another polling station in Rostamkhel area of Baraki district was targeted with a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) attack. The attack caused no casualties, but shattered the windowpanes of the building.

Mujahid, however, said their fighters attacked four polling stations in the central province just 60 kilometres from the capital city of Kabul.  Around 82 polling stations had been established in Logar.
