QALAT (PAN): Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of electoral officials and voters in the southern province of Zabul on Election Day, the police chief said on Tuesday.

Brig Gen Abdur Rehman Sarjang told Pajhwok Afghan News: "For election staff and voter security, more than six thousands Afghan and foreign forces have been deployed across the province."

The police chief admitted insurgents had planted improvised explosive devices on roads and had warned people against taking part in the elections due on Thursday. However, he assured the insurgents would not be able to cause any major disruption.

According to Sarjang, security personnel will be deputed in adequate numbers at 360 sensitive points on Election Day in order to thwart possible attacks from the insurgents.

Residents of several districts in the province say the Taliban have warned them against going to the bazaars and polling stations on August 20.
