KABUL (PAN): As Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission on Monday announced an end to the two-month campaign for presidential and provincial council polls 48 hours before the voting, the candidates made their last-minute efforts to woo voters.


Presidential hopefuls Mirwais Yasini and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai addressed gatherings in their support in the eastern province of Nangarhar on Monday.


A gathering of about 8000 people was held in the Sherzai Stadium of JalalabadCity in support of Mirwais Yasini.


His campaign manager in eastern zone, Ghafar Pacha, told Pajhwok Afghan News tribal elders, scholars, former mujahideen and youths from 22 districts of the province participated the gathering.


University teachers also pledged support to him on behalf of their students, while the tribal elders on behalf of their tribes.


Yasini told the gathering that people of the country were fed up with corruption, warlords and conflicts and wanted positive changes.


Announcing his programmes and priorities, the presidential aspirant promised to provide job opportunities to two millions people.


Yasini added he would collect 15 billions dollars in zakat from the well-off people of the country that would benefit 30 millions people.


In Kabul, a gathering of 300 women was held at the residence of Dr. Abdul Qayyum Sajjadi, a running mate of Yasini. The participants vowed to cast their votes in favour of Yasini.


Chairperson of the Islamic and National Association, a youth organisation, Madina Hikmat, claimed she had 3000 supporters in the city, who would exercise their franchise in support of Yasini.


Elsewhere, a gathering of 5000 people held in support of another presidential candidate Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai in Rodaat district of eastern Nangarhar province.


Ahmadzai promised to implement his ten-year plan what he said would prove a milestone in bringing stability and prosperity to the war-devastated country.


Another gathering in Chaknawri area of the Jalalabad city backed Ahmadzai.


Meanwhile, another gathering of about 2000 people was organized in support of incumbent presidential hopeful Hamid Karzai in Khugyani district of the province on Monday.
