KHOST CITY/KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Public meetings involving tribal elders and local residents in Khost, Kandahar, Nangarhar and Kunar provinces on Sunday voiced support to their favourite candidates in the presidential elections, slated for Thursday.


A gathering in southeastern Khost province was held in support of presidential contender Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and participated by a large number of youth, women, tribal elders and religious scholars.


Speakers said Ghani has the ability to pull the war devastated country out of the ongoing crises.


In southern Kandahar, people from Helmand, Uruzgan and Zabul provinces at a gathering announced support to incumbent President Hamid Karzai's reelection bid. Karzai's campaigner, Ahmad Wali Karzai, parliamentarian Khalid Pashtun and members of provincial councils addressed the gathering.


Also on Sunday, presidential hopeful Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai visited the same province. He promised to close down the US military base in Bagram and all other private prisons in the country, if he wins the elections.


In Jalalabad, provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar, a gathering supported Karzai. The gathering was organized by Karzai's campaigner Haji Abdul Zahir Qadir at Sherzai Stadium.


In Kunar, gatherings were held in support of Karzai and another aspirant Mirwais Yasini.
